One of the biggest mistakes people often make about bodybuilding is that you need to take drugs to get big! Not so – but wait! If, you want to become into a 240lb monster, with veins popping right left and center – then yes, this can only really happen with the introduction of muscle enhancing substances, or you have been gifted with fantastic genes!

Personally, I have always considered steroids as cheating – not only nature, but also yourself! If, you decide like me to train as natural as posasible,  and to put in the hard work and effort then you can build an excellent physique that will not only attract admiration, but also ensure your body stays healthy.

I have nothing against bodybuilders who take steroids to take part in competitions, it is the norm and rightly or wrongly that is the very nature of much of the sport. Some of my friends are national level competitors both male and female, who have spent a fortune on drugs to cheat nature and build truly awesome bodies.

I know personally, I don’t have the genetics to win Mr Olympia, but luckily I had parents who were both strong and healthy with a good bone structure than has enabled me to utilize what nature has given me. I can show anyone the way to train and improve – it is not rocket science! There are no magic formulas, no newly discovered tricks or shortcuts. It is down to good old hard work and dedication.

You don’t need to have the latest gym equipment, in an all chrome, music pulsating, mirrors on every wall fitness studio or to be wearing the latest designer Lycra outfit.  You can build a great body with only a few basic items, a well thought out training schedule and a good degree of self-motivation.

I’ve trained in gyms in many parts of the world, I remember once working out in a gym in Budapest Hungary. The equipment was of a high quality, the temperature outside was about 96F, inside the gym there was no air conditioning just one single fan, and one window. You can try this yourself by working out in your local sauna or steam room.

Halfway through a set of tricep presses I felt like I was melting into an ever-growing pool on the floor – and you start to question, “Why am I doing this?” I looked around the room, it was filled with eager, young Hungarians both male and female working away furiously despite the conditions. None of them spoke English and my knowledge of Hungarian was limited – but we all shared a common desire, to improve our physiques, to get fit and stay healthy. Health they say is life’s best revenge!

My point is – when the going gets tough – you have to keep going! I have always found that a lot of my training is in my head. I have a desire to improve, to be better than I was last year, to push myself further, to see what I can achieve, you don't give up - you only try harder!

Bodybuilding is the only sport you take with you 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Walk down any street in any part of the world (even Venice Beach CA) and you can be sure people will notice you and whisper “Bodybuilder”.

To me that is something I’m very proud of – I’ve worked hard, spent years training and since I don’t compete, a simple comment like “Oh a muscle man” is the highest accolade I can achieve – but its worth it!
